I will assign you to groups to read each other's work. Please see here for updates about which group you are in.
READING Due by Class 5
Pose questions or comments to this blog posting, but it isn't required.
1. A Riff on Creative Nonfiction
2. Read through at least one issue (or read 6 separate essays in any of the issues) of Brevity Magazine. (Extra points--just kidding--if you read my piece--My Father's Noose)
3. Read your group members' timed writing exercise from Class 3 and leave a comment on their personal blog. Tell them what seems compelling, powerful, interesting, vivid, mysterious, or interesting.
Don't give any critical feedback at this point. It's too early. Just tell them what stands out to you and why. Tell them what comes to life in their piece.
WRITING Due by Class 5
Repeat the step by step writing exercise from Class 3 with an item from one of your lists that your colleagues have alerted you as being interesting.
Repeat this exercise with as many items from your list as you'd like this week. Try to write a new one every day if you have time.

The article provides a healthy "reminder" list that should be reviewed prior to each writing session. Though not in compact form as found in the article, the McDonnell book, recommended reading for this course, has similar content with examples, specific to memoirs. I highly recommend this book on memoir writing, and it is an easy read.
Hello writers--
I hope you're enjoying your writing exercises.
Frank, I'm glad you're enjoying the reading. The McDonnell is a great book and I'm so glad you're reading it and recommending it.
For those in Group 1, Bob sent me a message that he is swamped with work and needs to catch up, so please keep that in mind if you're looking for him.
I also wanted to let you know that I'm in the middle of writing an essay about using blogs in my teaching for a newspaper. If you don't object (and please let me know if you do), I might quote want to quote from something you've written in the class blog about the experience of blogging (I won't quote from your exercises, perhaps just a comment about the experience of blogging).
Looking forward to reading more of your work!

To Grace, Frank, CconynO
Thank you all for your interest in my top ten list. Everyone with and without a big ego (you can guess where I fit) loves a willing audience and thus I will respond to all your requests 'with all deliberate speed,' if you'll permit me to borrow from the Supreme Court decision, Brown vs. Board of Education dealing with school segregation.
Grace, because of your interest in Grub Street Writers I looked it up and sent my application and check for membership. It's right down the street from my residence and must be a real winner.
Grace, regarding my thoughts on future writing training, I'm sure I'll proceed per your suggestion when I return from Florida in March. I'll be staying in Deerfield Beech, not far from Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton and would love to hear from any and all during December, January February. My cell: 617.840.8223. I tend to answer it 24/7. Of course I'm also happy to hear from all during the other nine months as well.
This writing course just brings me alive. Thanks to you all.
